Heading into the 2025 Major League Baseball season, the Boston Red Sox were my pick to win the American League.
They had gone out and made a big splash by trading for Garrett Crochet, and held the best prospects in baseball with Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell.
Boston should have been a juggernaut, but early season struggles has cooled off expectations. The team had a very quiet trade deadline and somehow, they find themselves nearly locked into a playoff spot.
Mixed Feelings
While the Red Sox likely won’t chase down the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East, they should have a Wild Card slot come October.
A matchup with the New York Yankees is the current odds on favorite first round series for Boston at this stage of the season. The other, a matchup with the Houston Astros.
Boston has the talent you need to win the World Series. An ace on their staff with complimentary arms in the rotation. A star closer in Aroldis Chapman, who is having a career resurgence this season, fits the bill for what Boston needs.
Offensively, they have more of a quantity of good hitters, than the quality of elite hitters. Free agent signing Alex Bergman has been great when healthy and the aforementioned Anthony is lighting the baseball world on fire with his performance.
On paper the Sox can hoist a trophy in the post-season, but the overall feeling surrounding the team does not match that enthusiasm. The modern post-season structure has changed the landscape of playoff baseball. We have seen since the expansion a Wild Card team make a deep run each and every season.
Red Sox History
In the 21st century, the Boston Red Sox have been an organization of champions. They have four titles since 2004 and always seem to come back swinging after a few down seasons.
This year could be another year for the Sox. If they avoid the mistakes of 2024, where they crumbled down the stretch, there should not be any reason to miss the post-season. The American League does not have many teams on the outside that should leap the current Wild Card teams of Boston, New York, and Seattle.
Once they are in, the Red Sox will be must see, especially if the opening series is against the Yankees. If they play their cards right, the next six weeks can be a tune up for a month long run up at Fenway Park.
