Kansas City went through a long playoff drought after winning the World Series in 2015. Their first appearance back in the postseason was in 2024, which led to higher expectations for this past year.

A dynamic Detroit Tigers team led the division for most of the season before a late-season collapse. The Cleveland Guardians, the division winner now in three of the last four seasons, were able to catch up to a static Tigers club in the second half of the season.

With rumors of Detroit’s unwillingness to extend 2-time Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal, it feels like the Tigers might hold themselves back from taking over the Central. Cleveland has always found ways to win with less. With their recent scandal involving Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, as well as trade rumors surrounding Stephen Kwan, it might be a retool year for Cleveland.

The Minnesota Twins tore down their roster at the Trade Deadline. Minnesota is unlikely to be a real threat in the division for years to come. A young Chicago White Sox team also has a long way to go before they are ready to battle in the AL Central as well.

Taking Control

Led by Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals had a very talented crew in 2025.

Closer Carlos Estevez led all of Major League Baseball in saves with 42. Longtime catcher Salvador Perez joined first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino with 30+ home runs and 100+ RBIs. Witt was joined by Maikel Garcia, Kris Bubic, and Estevez in the All-Star game this past season as well.

Bubic, Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, Noah Cameron, and Michael Wacha will all return as an underrated yet dynamic starting rotation. If healthy, this group can compete with teams like the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Dodgers in terms of star power in their rotation.

The pieces are in play for the Royals, but they need to improve around the edges of the roster. A massive upgrade to the outfield is in play this offseason and should be the club’s main focus.

Upgrades in Kansas City

Adding some offense to the outfield is what will allow the Royals to compete in the AL Central in 2026. With free agency underway, there are several options for the club to explore.

Rob Refsnyder

The former Boston Red Sox would be a great fit for the Royals. Rob Refsnyder absolutely smashes left-handed pitching, paving the way for a platoon role with his next club.

Kansas City could replace options such as Darion Blanco, Tyler Tolbert and Nick Loftin in the lineup for Refsnyder. This would add a more complete hitter and additional depth to the starting nine.

FanGraphs estimates that the outfielder will likely sign a one-year deal worth approximately five million dollars for 2026. This is budget-friendly and a no-brainer move for the Royals to make.

Willi Castro

Another potential signee this offseason could be Willi Castro. The former Minnesota Twin is very familiar with the AL Central, and his versatility could be exactly what the Royals need.

Castro can play all three outfield spots, as well as second and third base. His switch-hitting abilities will lead towards both lineup and roster flexibility. The veteran was better against left-handed pitching this past season, which is an area the Royals will need to upgrade this season.

Other options include: Harrison Bader, Trent Grisham and Lane Thomas.
