One of the best hitters in baseball has hit the free agent market.

New York Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso has put together quite the resume across his seven seasons in Queens. Alonso is the Mets’ all-time home run leader with 264, a mark that will be finished if he finds a new club this offseason.

Alonso brings raw power to any lineup he hits in. The veteran can play a quality first base, but it would not shock me to see him move into a designated hitter role based on the roster of a potential signer.

The Polar Bear is durable, playing in 98% of eligible games since making his debut in 2019. He led the National League in doubles this past season, while slugging 38 home runs and driving in 126 RBIs.

With the Seattle Mariners taking Josh Naylor off the board, Alonso is undoubtedly the best first baseman left on the market. These teams should all be interested in adding the slugger to their roster.

Boston Red Sox

You could argue that there is no team in greater need of a big offseason than the Boston Red Sox.

After making the playoffs in 2024, the Red Sox were bounced by their rivals, the New York Yankees, in the first round. The Sox have now watched Alex Bregman opt out of his contract and hit free agency once again. Boston is the caliber of market that could attract a player like Alonso and has a lineup in need of a power bat.

Tristan Casas has missed significant time in each of the last two seasons for Boston. Replacing Casas with Alonso completely flips the script on the durability of their first base position. Manager Alex Cora could pencil in the Polar Bear every day in 2026 without worry.

With young hitters such as Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Ceddanne Rafaela in their lineup, it would benefit the Sox to add a feared presence.

Alonso checks off a lot of needs for Boston, where he could be a natural fit. Plus, hitting balls over the Green Monster would be quite the sight at Fenway Park.

Philadelphia Phillies

With Kyle Schwarber now a free agent, the Philadelphia Phillies have an opening in their DH spot.

The expectation is that Schwarber will re-sign with the Phillies on a long-term contract. However, there is always a chance another team swipes him away from Philly.

If that is the case, or if the Phillies are looking to make an additional splash, Alonso could be an option.

Bryce Harper has made it known that he will move to the outfield if the club were to sign Alonso. This was a stance that Harper took last offseason and doubled down on during the trade deadline. With Harper in left field, Alonso at first, and Schwarber at DH, the Phillies lineup would be tough to beat.

Without Schwarber, Alonso could slide into the DH role, allowing Harper to remain at first base. He has finished as a finalist for the NL Gold Glove award in each of his two full seasons at first base.

The Phillies have the money to attract Alonso. Getting a chance to steal a top player from their rivals in New York would not be a bad consolation prize either. Philly can make this work, and there should be interest from the slugging first baseman.

A chance to win a World Series has to be top of mind for Alonso.

Baltimore Orioles

Staying on the East Coast, the Baltimore Orioles could be another option for Alonso.

Baltimore took a major step back in 2025, missing the playoffs after being favored to win the American League East. They flipped places with the Toronto Blue Jays in the division standings.

Needing a big move to get back into the hunt, the Orioles could be an attractive option for Alonso. The club could plug him in as a first baseman or DH, and his power would anchor a young and upcoming lineup.

The Orioles are now seemingly going all-in on power. After trading for Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Taylor Ward, the club has now added a legitimate power threat from the right side. If Tyler O’Neill can stay healthy, there is another bat that would help anchor the Baltimore lineup.

Alonso gives the O’s an opportunity to show the league they aren’t going to sit on their hands. Baltimore certainly needs pitching to be a threat for the AL East, but bulking up on offense should not prevent them from upgrading a deep, young roster.
