Earlier this afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies officially released veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos.
After four seasons in Philly, Castellanos will now have a chance to find a new home in 2026.
With Spring Training underway, it will be interesting to see how quickly his market might develop. These are a few clubs that I could see Castellanos joining for the upcoming season.
Colorado Rockies
With Kris Bryant being placed on the 60-Day Injured List, the Rockies have freed up another outfield spot on their roster.
The Rockies do not have much proven talent, and while the team is not looking to compete, it should not prevent them from potentially adding Castellanos. The reason for this potential union would be for the Rockies to flip Castellanos at the trade deadline eventually.
If Castellanos joined the Rockies, he would likely DH against left-handed starting pitchers. He is a below-average outfielder at this stage in his career, and the Rockies have committed to strong defensive outfielders for this season in Jordan Beck, Brenton Doyle, and Jake McCarthy.
Left-handed hitting outfield Mickey Moniak is likely the team’s DH. Moniak is a strict platoon hitter; paving the way for a pairing with Castellanos.
This move wouldn’t shake up baseball in any way this season, but the Rockies do love to make moves that leave you shrugging your shoulders.
Cincinnati Reds
Castellanos had his best season as a big leaguer with the Reds back in 2021. Would a reunion make sense?
In 2021, the veteran right-hander hit .309 with a .939 OPS, 34 home runs, and 100 runs batted in. This season is what led Castellanos to his long-term deal in Philadelphia.
The Reds will be running out Noelvi Marte and JJ Bleday in the corner outfield this season, with Spencer Steer, Will Benson, and Dane Myers as bench options. Castellanos has a more proven track record than each of these options and would be a cheap signing for Cincy.
Cincinnati missed out on one member of the 2025 Phillies already this offseason, will they go after another?
Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves do not have a lot of depth in their outfield behind Ronald Acuna Jr.
The team signed Mike Yaztrzemski this offseason to play left and still have Michael Harris Jr. patrolling center field. They also have a returning Jurickson Profar, who can play the corner outfield.
On their projected bench, Atlanta has Eli White, Brett Wisely, and Jorge Mateo as outfield depth options. Castellanos would be a far better option for the Braves if this remains the group that heads to Atlanta for Opening Day.
If Castellanos finds his swing again, it would make a lot of sense for the Braves to take a flier. Motivation to compete against the Phillies 13 times in 2026 would certainly be entertaining. Additionally, we often see division rivals acquire players from other in-division teams.
As a low-risk, high-reward caliber signing, it would make a lot of sense for the Atlanta Braves to be in the mix for Castellanos.
Where do you think he will land? Let me know in the comments below.
