Mickey Moniak

Colorado Rockies outfielder Mickey Moniak is off to an incredible start to 2026.

The former first overall pick found his stride at the big league level in 2023 with the Los Angeles Angels before joining Colorado in 2025. Moniak has strictly become a platoon bat, facing off against right-handed starting pitching.

This season has been a little different for the soon to be 28-year-old. Moniak enters play this weekend with a 1.067 OPS with 11 home runs. He has been otherworldly for the Rockies.

It is no secret that the Colorado Rockies currently sit towards the bottom of Major League Baseball.

Despite one of their best starters in recent memory, Colorado still finds itself staring down the barrel of a rebuild. However, Moniak might be able to assist.

While I do not expect the former Phillies draft pick to hit above a 1.000 OPS for the entire season, I would expect his hot start to continue well into the season.

Colorado could then look to flip Moniak in late July during the Major League Baseball trade deadline.

Rockies rebuild continues

While Moniak might feel like a young player, he is certainly entering his prime years. The Rockies could benefit from grabbing a younger prospect in a deal.

Contractually, Moniak is very appealing.

He is under contract through the end of the 2027 season, meaning any team trading for him would get a year and a half of service.

Now, there are two factors you have to consider with the early success of the Rockies’ outfielder.

The first is the ballpark factor. Moniak has done most of his damage in Colorado, the most friendly hitters park in baseball. The second factor is his platoon role. The lefty primarily only gets chances to hit righties and would have to resume that role with a new club.

However, those should not deter any team from going after him.

Moniak has proven to hit at the Major League level. He can be a contributing piece of a contending club.

If he continues to hit in Colorado, I can see him being named an All-Star come July. Then a few weeks later, I can see him being moved in a deadline deal.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
