When the San Francisco Giants hired Buster Posey as their President of Baseball Operations, I was sold on the move.

A Hall of Fame catcher who was highly regarded in the baseball community, not to mention a local legend, seemed like a natural fit for the position.

Posey has one of the more challenging jobs in the game, considering the fact he has to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers year in and year out.

However, just a few seasons into the Posey era, he will need to find a way to rectify early mistakes.

Sleeping Giants

When the Giants landed Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox, everyone immediately felt as though the Giants were going to be contenders.

Reality has shown quite the opposite.

San Francisco missed the playoffs in 2025 and with a 13-21 record in 2026, the odds of overcoming their early season struggles seems like false hope.

The Giants rank 30th in on-base percentage, runs scored, and home runs. They rank nearly last in almost every major category.

Much of their payroll is tied to offensive players with Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman all under contract through at least 2030.

Buster Posey

Posey’s signature move to this point in his career will be hiring Tony Vitello to become the team’s skipper this past offseason.

While it is far too early to give a determining answer on whether this was a smart choice, the Giants have not exactly given their new manager much to work with.

If the season continues to derail, it would not shock me to see Posey move on from his most debated decision. If the Giants’ president of baseball operations does chose to move on from Vitello, it would certainly begin to question whether or not he is the man for the job.

Regardless, the players on the roster need to play to their contracts.

If not, it will be another loss season in the Bay Area.
